The Lithium-Ion Battery Separator Air Permeability Tester is a precision laboratory and production-grade instrument designed to evaluate the air permeability of Lithium battery separators using the internationally recognized Gurley method.


Air permeability is a critical physical property of battery separators. It directly affects Electrolyte wetting, ionic conductivity, internal resistance, and safety performance of lithium-ion and solid-state batteries.


This tester measures the time required for 100 ml of air to pass through a separator sample with a standard area of 6.45 cm² under a constant pressure difference of 1.21 kPa, providing a direct and quantitative indicator of separator pore structure and uniformity.

 

Why Air Permeability Matters in Battery Separators
In lithium-ion and solid-state batteries, the separator must achieve a delicate balance between ionic transport and mechanical safety. If air permeability is too low, Electrolyte penetration becomes insufficient, leading to high internal resistance and poor rate capability. If air permeability is too high, it may indicate large or non-uniform pores, increasing the risk of internal short circuits and dendrite growth.

 

The Gurley air permeability value is therefore a core quality index for:

Testing Principle – Gurley Method

The instrument follows the Gurley air permeability principle, in accordance with battery and material standards.

Under controlled temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure:

● A constant pressure differential of 1.21 kPa is applied

● 100 ml of air is forced through the separator

● The time (seconds) required is measured

A longer time indicates lower permeability (denser structure), while a shorter time indicates higher permeability (more open pore structure).

 

Sample Conditioning & Test Environment

To guarantee high repeatability and international comparability, samples should be conditioned according to GB/T 2918-1998:
